Custom Spiral Wound Gaskets for Bulk Export from a Reliable Supplier in China

What Are Spiral Wound Gaskets?

Spiral wound gaskets are semi-metallic sealing components used in industrial piping, pressure vessels, valves and heat exchangers with flanged connections. They are manufactured by winding a pre-formed metal strip and a softer filler material such as graphite, PTFE, or ceramic in a V-shaped spiral around a solid metal outer ring, and optionally an inner ring.

This construction combines the spring-like recovery of the metal winding with the conformability of the filler, creating a seal that performs reliably under high pressure, high temperature, and thermal cycling. Spiral wound gaskets are the standard choice for ASME B16.20, API 6A, DIN EN 1514-2 and JIS B 2404 flanges in chemical, petrochemical, refinery, power, marine and offshore systems.

Key Features and Advantages

Spiral wound gaskets outperform flat gaskets in medium-to-high pressure, high-temperature and thermal cycling service. Their main advantages are:

  • Excellent resilience and recovery: the spiral-wound structure acts like a spring, compensating for flange rotation, minor misalignment and thermal expansion.
  • Wide temperature and pressure range: from cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 1000°C (1832°F) and from vacuum to Class 2500 / PN400, depending on metal and filler selection.
  • Superior creep relaxation resistance: the metal winding maintains bolt load over time, ensuring a lasting seal throughout the maintenance cycle.
  • High blowout resistance: the metallic structure prevents extrusion or blowout under sudden pressure surges.
  • Versatility: available in ASME B16.20, API 6A, DIN EN 1514-2 and JIS B 2404 standard sizes, plus custom designs for any flange facing.

Filler Material Properties

  • Flexible Graphite (Grafoil®): excellent thermal and chemical resistance, low creep relaxation, performs in oxidizing atmospheres up to 450°C, non-stick. Continuous service up to 550°C in inert atmospheres.
  • PTFE (Teflon®): superior chemical inertness, low friction, ideal for corrosive media and clean systems. Continuous service from -200°C to +260°C.
  • Ceramic / Mica / Non-Asbestos: used for extremely high-temperature applications above 500°C where graphite may oxidize. Service up to 1000°C, with good thermal and electrical insulation.

Applications of Spiral Wound Gaskets

  • Chemical processing: reactors, columns, heat exchangers, pumps and valves handling acids, bases and solvents.
  • Petrochemical and refinery: crude oil, hydrocracking, catalytic reforming and sour gas lines.
  • Power generation: high-pressure steam, feedwater and condensate systems.
  • Oil and gas: wellhead, pipeline and API 6A flanges, including NACE MR0175 sour service.
  • Marine and offshore: seawater, ballast and fuel systems on ships and platforms.
  • Heat exchangers: shell-and-tube, plate and air-cooled exchangers with thermal cycling.

How to Select the Right Spiral Wound Gasket

  1. Identify the medium. Acids, bases and solvents point to PTFE filler; high-temperature steam and hydrocarbons point to graphite filler.
  2. Confirm temperature and pressure. Match the metal and filler to continuous and peak temperatures, and to the flange pressure class.
  3. Choose the winding metal. SS304/316 for general service; Alloy 20, Hastelloy, Monel or Titanium for corrosive media.
  4. Choose the filler. Graphite for high temperature; PTFE for chemical inertness; ceramic or mica for above 500°C.
  5. Select the flange facing. RF or RTJ per ASME B16.20; FF, M/F or T/G for custom flanges.
  6. Decide on inner and outer rings. Outer ring is standard; inner ring is recommended for high-pressure, vacuum and high-velocity service.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use a spiral wound gasket instead of a flat gasket?

Use a spiral wound gasket for medium to high-pressure service above Class 150 / PN20, high-temperature applications, and systems with thermal cycling or flange movement. They are also the standard choice for hazardous, toxic or expensive media where leak-tight integrity is critical. Flat gaskets such as rubber or compressed non-asbestos are sufficient for low-pressure, low-temperature, non-critical service.

What is the purpose of the inner and outer rings on a spiral wound gasket?

The outer ring centers the gasket in the bolt circle, provides radial stability, acts as a compression stop and offers blowout protection. The inner ring is optional but recommended for high-pressure and vacuum service: it prevents inward buckling of the winding and protects the filler from erosion by high-velocity media.

How do I select the correct metal and filler material for my application?

Material selection depends on three factors: chemical compatibility with the medium, operating temperature, and system pressure. First, check compatibility charts for both metal and filler against your process fluid. Second, verify continuous and peak temperatures. Third, confirm the winding metal has sufficient strength for the flange pressure class. Send your service conditions to the Kaxite engineering team for a recommendation within 24 hours.

What is the difference between spiral wound gaskets and kammprofile gaskets?

Spiral wound gaskets use a spiral-wound metal and filler construction that provides excellent recovery and is widely used in general chemical and petrochemical flanges. Kammprofile gaskets use a grooved metal core with a soft facing, offering higher compression and better performance in heat exchangers and high-pressure service. Both are semi-metallic gaskets, but they are selected for different flange types and operating conditions.

Can spiral wound gaskets be reused after disassembly?

Spiral wound gaskets are generally not recommended for reuse. Once compressed, the filler and winding may not recover enough to guarantee a reliable seal. For maintenance-critical flanges, always install a new gasket and inspect the flange surfaces before reassembly.
